Nominations Are Now Being Accepted for the 2023 AFP Canada Board of Directors

You have the power to influence the focus and direction of AFP in a very concrete way: by submitting your nomination for the 2023 AFP Canada Board of Directors.

AFP Canada, formed in 2017, was created to bring a Canadian perspective to AFP’s government relations and communications (e.g., legislation and regulations that affect fundraising, bilingualism and a focus on Truth and Reconciliation). We represent more than 3,200 fundraising professionals working to support causes and missions that help Canadians from coast to coast to coast. We serve as the voice of the fundraising profession in Canada and are part of the larger AFP Global network—the largest community of professional fundraisers in the world.

Guided by the AFP in Canada Strategic Plan, we focus on government relations and communications. Working in close partnership with 21 local chapters and the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy – Canada, AFP Canada strives to stimulate a world of generosity through ethical and effective fundraising.

The AFP Canada Board is a working board seeking active participation, committee involvement and a desire to elevate the profession in Canada. Board members are expected to maintain their AFP membership, adhere to the AFP Code of Ethics, attend 75% of all board meetings and encouraged to make a donation to the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy – Canada in alignment with personal giving goals.  

AFP Canada is committed to the principles of IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access). We strive to create a welcoming and diverse board where all members feel they belong, feel heard, and are appreciated for their unique contributions. Special consideration will be given to people from different sectors (arts, health, education, consultant/agency etc.), organization size, backgrounds, races, languages, religions and communities across Canada.

The evaluation criteria used by the Nominating Committee includes:

  • Leadership ability that demonstrates the skills needed to govern a professional association;
  • Previous service to AFP, philanthropy and the community locally, nationally and/or internationally;
  • Participation in AFP activities as a volunteer; and
  • AFP membership standing (membership is required for board service).

Additional consideration will be given to the following:

  • Relevant professional certification, education or learning;
  • Overall knowledge of AFP;
  • Demonstrated inclusive leadership experience;
  • Financial support of the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy – Canada;
  • Ability to communicate in both of Canada’s official languages;
  • Diversity of geographic location and of chapter size;
  • Diversity of areas of professional practice;
  • Demographic diversity (e.g., people of different ages, races, religions, sexual orientation, etc.);
  • Other community perspectives needed by AFP at the time candidates are being considered.

The board will consist of up to twenty members. Directors shall serve one-year or two-year terms with a maximum of eight consecutive years on the board. The opportunities available for 2023 are as follows: Chair-Elect (2-year term); Secretary (1-year term); Treasurer (1-year term); Director (6 positions will be 1-year terms and 6 will be 2-year terms).

All nominees will be contacted by the Nominating Committee to discuss their interest in the board. The proposed slate will be presented to the current board of directors and then to AFP members in Canada for endorsement in November; the final slate will be announced in December.

The 2023 board members will begin their service starting January 1, 2023. All new members will be assigned a mentor to help familiarize themselves with the board role. Additionally, an orientation session will be held in January which provides an overview of AFP Canada’s work.
