The horizon of philanthropy is illuminated with promise. In 2021, the U.S. witnessed an unprecedented surge in philanthropy, soaring past the remarkable milestone of half a trillion dollars in charitable giving. Notably, this generosity endures, even amid the turbulence of national and global economic fluctuations.
However, a closer examination of recent insights from Giving USA and the Chronicle of Philanthropy reveals a sobering prospect: the giving milestone achieved in 2021 may remain unbroken in the coming years, challenging the very foundations of major giving as we have come to understand it.
These emerging trends in philanthropy are further compounded by the impending wealth transfer and profound generational shifts in donor engagement and contribution preferences. Simply put, current donors who have a lot of money are giving it to younger donors, and these donors give in very different ways for very different reasons. This means the way we fundraise is going to change significantly, potentially setting off a transformational shift in philanthropy for the next half a century.
