AFP BC, Vancouver Island Chapter Event: National Philanthropy Day 2020

Each year, National Philanthropy Day (NPD) on Vancouver Island provides an opportunity to gather to celebrate the generosity of our community and learn new skills to apply to the philanthropic sector. In the past, we have shared in our celebration and professional development through three events: the National Philanthropy Day Awards Ceremony, Masterclass, and Agents of Change Youth Session.

Since 1986, the Association of Fundraising Professionals’ (AFP) National Philanthropy Day (NPD) has served as an inspirational community- building event that engages philanthropic individuals and organizations from across Vancouver Island.

The COVID-19 Pandemic has presented our global community with evolving challenges. While we recognize the financial, mental, social and other obstacles faced by members of our community, we have also been overwhelmed by the generosity of neighbours near and far. Our community has come together in unique, innovative, and caring ways to support one another, and we strongly believe that this needs to be celebrated. We have adapted National Philanthropy Day 2020 to provide the Vancouver Island community with an opportunity to highlight outstanding acts of philanthropy, learn from one another, and celebrate together during these uncertain times, while protecting the health and safety of everyone.

Our 2020 NPD celebration will be transformed into a virtual series of the following celebrations and events:

Giving Hearts Honour Roll
Presented By: Coast Capital Savings
Each year, we welcome nominations from the community in recognition of an individual or business that has made outstanding contributions to the community. This year we are postponing our regular 6 awards categories, and instead creating a “Giving Hearts Honour Roll” to celebrate the outstanding acts of local change makers including individuals, nonprofits, organizations, businesses, and community groups who have responded to unprecedented needs in our community in unique and generous ways.

Virtual Philanthropy Cafe Masterclass
Presenting Sponsor: Victoria Foundation
This year’s Masterclass will present a unique opportunity to gather virtually through a series of world cafe “rooms”. Attendees will have the pleasure of hearing various speakers discuss relevant philanthropic topics in a series of rotating breakout “rooms”. A full list of speakers and content will be shared in the early Fall.

Coast Capital Savings Power of Youth: Giving Hearts Workshop
Presented By: Coast Capital Savings
We recognize the power of youth; when they believe in a cause and work with others, they can change the world. This year, we will collaborate with schools, classrooms, youth councils, clubs, and youth groups to distribute the AFP VI National Philanthropy Day 2020 “Philanthropy Tool-kit”. This will provide youth with a new foundation of skills in philanthropy that they can apply within their community.

Thanks to the generosity of the Andrew Beckerman Fund at the Victoria Foundation, each youth group will be given the opportunity to select a charity of their choice to receive a $250 donation through CanadaHelps, by providing a submission that shows what they have learned about philanthropy.

If you know of youth, groups, councils, or classrooms who would be interested in taking part, please contact us!
