About National Philanthropy Day

History

National Philanthropy Day® (NPD) was originally conceived of and organized by Douglas Freeman in the 1980s and became officially recognized in the U.S. in 1986 when President Ronald Reagan proclaimed November 15th as National Philanthropy Day®. In 2012, Canada officially recognized NPD permanently, setting a new model for other countries to emulate.

Now, NPD is recognized every November 15th.

What is NPD?

Philanthropy is “the love of humankind,” and NPD is the day that thousands of people around the world come together to put that word into action and recognize the change that word has brought to our communities.

NPD is a celebration of philanthropy — giving, volunteering, and charitable engagement — that highlights the accomplishments, large and small, that philanthropy, and all those involved in the philanthropic process, make to our society and our world.

How is NPD Celebrated?

Communities around the world celebrate NPD by hosting events recognizing donors, volunteers, foundations, leaders, corporations, and others engaged in philanthropy.

These events will often feature notable speeches and appearances by local government officials, as well as distribution of awards related to philanthropy and fundraising.

Others celebrate by raising public awareness and interest about the importance of philanthropy, volunteering, and engagement with the charitable and nonprofit sectors.

About AFP

The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) is the chief supporter and sponsor of the NPD movement, though we are honored to work with organizations that support philanthropy and charitable engagement around the world.

Since its inception in 1960, AFP has inspired change, supporting fundraising efforts around the world that have generated more than $1 trillion. AFP’s network raises over $115 billion annually, equivalent to one-third of all charitable giving in North America, with millions more generated around the world.
