The AFP Foundation for Philanthropy – Canada is pleased to announce the appointment of Sonia Sheechoria as Managing Director, Philanthropy and Operations, Canada, reflecting an expanded mandate to support the continued growth and long-term sustainability of philanthropic education, research, and scholarship nationwide.

Following a national search, Sonia has served as Director with the Foundation since December 2024, operating in a part-time capacity while leading a period of rebuilding and renewed momentum. This expanded, full-time role formally recognizes the scope of leadership she has already been providing and positions the Foundation for its next phase of growth and impact.

Over the past year, Sonia has played a central role in strengthening the Foundation’s fundraising and stewardship efforts. This work included revitalizing donor storytelling, increasing visibility through renewed communications channels, and creating more consistent and meaningful engagement with supporters and chapters across Canada. These efforts have helped deepen donor relationships and reinforce the connection between philanthropy and impact.

Sonia has also led the development and refinement of national fundraising initiatives, including the successful launch of new campaigns and the evolution of chapter-supported programs. These initiatives were intentionally designed to support local chapters, strengthen participation in Every Member Campaigns, and align more closely with National Philanthropy Day activities across the country.

Under her leadership, the Foundation has expanded its network of strategic in-kind partners, enhancing operational capacity while multiplying value for members and donors. These partnerships have supported the professionalization of Foundation systems and services, enabling more efficient delivery of programs without increasing the organization’s financial footprint.

In addition, Sonia has prioritized strengthening relationships with chapters, funders, and research institutions. This includes advancing capacity-building initiatives, supporting IDEAA-focused grant work, and initiating early-stage research collaborations that will contribute to national donor data and sector-wide insights.

“Since joining AFP-FC, Sonia has been an invaluable member of our team,” said Amanda Fritz, CFRE, MPNL, and Muneeb Syed, CFRE, Co-Chairs of the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy – Canada. “She plays a central role in connecting our community of supporters with the vital work their generosity makes possible. We are delighted to celebrate Sonia’s expanded role and look forward to having her by our side as we continue advancing education, research, and scholarship for all fundraisers across Canada.”

Sonia brings extensive experience in fundraising leadership, nonprofit operations, and community engagement. She holds a Master’s degree in Leadership and Community Engagement and is a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE).

In her role as Managing Director, Sonia will continue working closely with the Board, chapters, donors, and partners to advance ethical and effective fundraising, ensuring the Foundation remains responsive to the evolving needs of the profession across Canada.
