In this Member Spotlight, we interviewed Mélissa Joseph, information management coordinator for a hospital foundation in Montreal. She shared with us how she is using her information management skills to increase efficiency within her organization.
Q: How did you start your career in the fundraising profession and what led you there?
A: I began in the field as an accounting intern within the donor database and relationship management team. Following this experience, I decided to pursue a career in philanthropy to utilize my skills to help those in need. I am now the information management coordinator for a hospital foundation in Montreal.
Q: When and why did you decide to become an AFP member?
A: Introduced to philanthropy by an inspiring director, I had the opportunity to attend AFP’s Fundraising Fundamentals course in 2020. I always wanted to be a member of AFP. In 2023, I officially joined AFP by winning a one-year membership. AFP allows me to stay current with trends, strengthen my skills in accordance with my values, and expand my professional network.
Q: Are you doing anything innovative in your organization (or a previous one) that other fundraisers might benefit from?
A: I am currently developing a set of procedures to improve the management of information and our database. Although these adjustments may seem basic, they are crucial for optimizing our efficiency and could benefit other similar organizations.
Q: What is your favourite word? (only one word) How has this word influenced or inspired your career?
A: “Resilience” is the word that sums up my professional philosophy. Facing challenges, I persevere and remain true to my convictions, which encourages me to overcome obstacles and stay authentic in my mission to serve others.
Q: What professional achievement are you most proud of?
A: I am particularly proud of having designed and implemented a comprehensive platform for a major event, overseeing all aspects of its management. This project was not only successful but also enhanced my reputation as an effective project leader.
Q: How has being an AFP member and participating in the AFP affinity groups benefited you in your career?
A: As a member of AFP, I’ve discovered the affinity groups. By seeking answers to certain questions, I’ve had the opportunity to meet and discuss with other individuals with similar experiences. I’ve found inspiration, new ideas, and hope.
Q: In your opinion, what is the biggest challenge facing the nonprofit fundraising profession today?
A: The current major challenge is the increasing competition among many causes, coupled with rising living costs which impact generosity and donations. Standing out while retaining donors requires constant creativity and innovation.
Q: What advice do you have for other fundraising professionals, or people interested in getting into the field?
A: Do not be afraid to assert yourself, be bold, proactive, and confident in your abilities. Not succeeding at first does not mean failure.
Find a mentor; mentorship is crucial for your personal and professional development. Always remember the reasons that motivate you to work in this field, as they are your greatest strength.
