From May 3–5, 2026, fundraising professionals from across Canada gathered in Calgary, Alberta, for AFP COMPASS 2026 – three inspiring days of learning, leadership development, networking, and connection hosted by the AFP Calgary & Area Chapter.

Held in the heart of the West and infused with unmistakable Western Hospitality, AFP COMPASS 2026 brought together fundraisers, nonprofit leaders, corporate partners, and sector champions committed to strengthening philanthropy and advancing the fundraising profession.

The conference featured a dynamic lineup of keynote speakers, educational sessions, networking opportunities, and social events designed to equip attendees with practical tools and fresh perspectives to better serve their organizations and communities.

“This year’s conference reminded us that fundraising is ultimately about people, relationships, and shared purpose,” said Ron Smith, President of the AFP Calgary & Area Chapter. “To see professionals from across the country gathering together to learn, encourage one another, and strengthen our sector was incredibly meaningful. We are grateful to everyone who helped make AFP COMPASS 2026 such a success.”

Special guests from both AFP Canada and AFP Global attended this year’s conference, highlighting the growing national profile and importance of the COMPASS conference experience.

AFP Leadership“We were honoured to welcome Roger Ali and Richard Morgan from AFP Canada, along with Kendall Joyner and Chris Dinegar from AFP Global,” said Smith. “The fact that they made the trip to Calgary to experience COMPASS firsthand speaks volumes about the strength and momentum of our chapter and our conference community.”

Attendees benefited from presentations and insights shared by respected sector leaders, including Russell James, Alice Ferris, and Jim Anderson, whose sessions challenged participants to think differently about philanthropy, donor relationships, leadership, and long-term fundraising success.

ABoots Event major highlight of the conference was the highly anticipated “Boot, Scoot & Schmoozin’” networking event held at Ranchman’s, Calgary’s iconic country nightclub, which combined relationship-building with Calgary’s signature energy and hospitality. The event was made possible through the support and enthusiasm of community leaders and sponsors who embraced the spirit of the evening.

AFP Calgary also extended heartfelt appreciation to Global Philanthropic Inc. (Canada), the conference’s Presenting Sponsor, for its generous support and ongoing commitment to advancing the fundraising profession. We were very appreciative of the support this year from all of our sponsors – thank you!

The success of AFP COMPASS 2026 was driven by an extraordinary team of volunteers, sponsors, speakers, partners, and attendees. Special recognition was given to conference Chair Derek Fraser and AFP Calgary Executive Director Lorie Abernethy for their months of dedication, planning, and leadership.

As the conference concluded, attendees left energized, encouraged, and inspired by the shared commitment to building stronger organizations and healthier communities through philanthropy.

“AFP COMPASS exists to provide the sector with the best possible fundraising and leadership education we can offer, while also creating meaningful opportunities for connection,” Smith reflected. “After taking a moment to celebrate this year’s success, we’re already beginning conversations about how we can make next year’s event even stronger.”
