With the postal strike that began early Friday occurring during one of the most critical times of the year for charities, the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) is urging both sides to reach a settlement as soon as possible.

“We are concerned about the postal strike’s impact on charities—and most importantly those who rely on their services,” said Jennifer Johnstone, chair of AFP Canada. “This is the busiest time of year for our fundraisers. Direct mail remains the primary method for annual donations, most of which are made at this time of year. A postal disruption severely impacts charities’ ability to deliver essential services to communities in need,” explained Johnstone.

“With most annual donations being made right now, the timing of this strike couldn’t be worse," shared Johnstone. “Donors may receive their donation requests too late, donations sent by mail may be delayed, and some donors may decide to delay making their donations. This could result in a major loss of funding just when it is most needed by charities.”

The need for charitable support is significant. According to an Ipsos poll conducted for CanadaHelps, a quarter of Canadians rely on charities for basic needs such as food, shelter, and health services. The funding to provide these services comes from donations.

According to AFP surveys, many charities receive at least half of their annual donations during the final three months of the year, with December being the most pivotal month.

In light of the postal strike, AFP is encouraging donors to explore alternative ways to give, including via phone, online, or in person. Most charities now provide secure online donation options through their websites and share information on other giving methods.

Fundraisers can consider the following strategies to minimize the impact of the postal strike on their fundraising campaigns:

  • Update your website homepage to prominently address postal delays and outline alternative donation methods.
  • Send e-blasts to inform donors of alternative giving options such as online, by phone or in-person.
  • Use voicemail broadcasts with an option to connect donors directly to a live representative to make a donation immediately.

AFP encourages donors not to pause their giving because of the postal strike. Please consider alternative ways to donate. Your support is needed now, more than ever.
