AFP Canada’s Statement on the Canada Student Service Grant/We Charity Controversy
AFP Canada shares the concerns of many Canadians about the recent issues surrounding the federal government’s awarding of a contract to deliver the Canada Student Service Grant to the WE charity.
We are supportive of initiatives that encourage public engagement and volunteerism, and were pleased to learn of the government’s commitment to supporting students across our country.
While many questions are being asked of the government and of the WE charity, AFP Canada is concerned about this issue’s potential impact on charitable giving and philanthropy. Allegations of unethical practices could potentially erode the trust of Canadians in the philanthropic process long established in our country.
AFP’s mission is to stimulate giving, volunteering and positive social good through ethical and effective fundraising. Our members adhere to an enforceable code of ethics which guides their behaviour as professionals. We encourage all fundraisers and organizations to practice ethical fundraising.
