AFP Congratulates New Government, Urges Creation of Sector Secretariat
Following the recent federal election, AFP Canada sent letters to all Members of Parliament congratulating them on the election and urging them to create a dedicated secretariat for our sector.
We reminded each MP of the vital role of fundraisers in helping to shape public policy and raising life-changing funds in communities nationwide. The following key points were emphasized:
- As Canada's largest professional fundraising association, AFP is an important resource for the Government on fundraising and charitable sector issues. We have extensive experience working with government on policies that affect the sector and how people give and volunteer.
- Up to 24% of Canadians expect to rely on charities for basic needs.
- Our sector makes a critical contribution to communities while generating over 8% of GDP through more than 170,000 nonprofits and charities that support Canadians.
- Despite the sector's role in delivering government objectives, we face significant challenges that hamper our ability to meet the needs of Canadians and their families.
- AFP is calling on the federal government to create a permanent dedicated secretariat for the charitable sector in Canada, and to include the sector in government assistance programs in response to the U.S. tariffs.
We encourage AFP members to connect with their MP—to offer congratulations and highlight the vital contributions our sector makes in their community. Our work strengthens communities across Canada and delivers impact that resonates across all political parties.
The over 3,000 AFP members in Canada fundraise for organizations large and small, in rural and remote communities as well as towns and major cities across the country. Fundraisers support the arts, culture, shelters, emergency services, healthcare, education, reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples, and social justice. Our members comply with the highest ethical standards in the profession, the AFP Code of Ethical Standards.
