The AFP Foundation for Philanthropy Early Career Emerging Scholar Award was established by the Association of Fundraising Professionals Research Council to honor an individual who is emerging as a contributing scholar or scholar-practitioner to the discourse on philanthropy and fundraising.  The purpose of the award is to recognize those who are pursuing research agendas congruent with the mission and interests of the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy Research Council.  The award is given for a significant body of scholarship or a single extraordinary research achievement and in recognition of potential for future research.

For this award, scholarship is defined in terms of substantive academic (theoretical, empirical, or applied) and/or scholar-practitioner contributions.  Quantity of scholarship alone is insufficient evidence for awarding this honor.

Criteria considered in selection of the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy Early Career Emerging Scholar Award are the following:

  • Be within 8 years of earning one’s doctorate and be pre-tenure, if on the tenure track
  • Have a record of scholarship that clearly establishes the recipient as a leading scholar or scholar-practitioner at a similar career stage
  • Show evidence of a further promising career as an academic research or scholar-practitioner
  • Demonstrate impact on the state of scholarship or advancement of knowledge

Nominations, which may be submitted for oneself or someone else, must include the following:

  1. The nominee’s CV
  2. At least one of the following:
    1. A maximum two-page single-spaced statement, written by the nominee, of the nominee’s research agenda
    2. At least one recommendation from a nominator; this letter should address the nominee’s research and scholarship and future research potential
