AFP Chapter Lobby Week: Surprisingly Simple, Highly Effective
Some years it can be quiet in the public policy space, but NOT this year. It’s a GREAT time to create a connection with a member of Congress and/or their staff (like you would with a donor) as Congress works on issues related to the charitable IRA rollover, the universal charitable deduction and others!
There’s a very good chance that an expanded IRA rollover provision will be signed into law this year—if we keep the pressure on Congress!
Scheduling a meeting is straightforward: Contact the office and tell them you’re a constituent and would like to meet with the member of Congress and/or their staffer who handles charity/tax issues. (Meeting with a staffer is great—we’ll take those!)
And while Chapter Lobby Week is officially May 23 – 27, the most important thing is just to schedule a meeting—anytime!
AFP Global has developed all the resources you need for an effective and successful meeting!
- A tool kit outlining all the steps to schedule, meet and follow up

Fundraisers are natural-born advocates. Advocacy is very similar to fundraising—they’re all about creating connections and developing relationships, only in this case, the ask isn’t about money, it’s about supporting legislation!
So, get involved. Help your chapter set up just one meeting and use this opportunity to create connections with local policy makers AND advance the fundraising profession.
If you have any questions, email the AFP Global Public Policy Department at email@example.com.
