"Moving The Needle" will provide an overview of legacy giving centered around research and data with practical program suggestions to help one move the needle for their organization. We will address:

  • Understanding Legacy Giving: Gain a clear understanding of what legacy giving entails, including types of gifts, motivations of donors, and the impact on organizational sustainability.
  • Practical Program Suggestions: Receive practical guidance and strategies on developing and implementing legacy giving programs that align with organizational goals and donor preferences.
  • Building Donor Relationships: Discover best practices for cultivating relationships with prospective legacy donors, including effective communication strategies and stewardship techniques.

About our Speaker:

Andrea McFarling, Philanthropy Officer of Legacy Giving, Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History

Since entering the field of fundraising as a student at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), Andrea McFarling has accumulated more than 30 years of professional fundraising experience in the Santa Barbara area. Armed with a B.A. in Social Science and a minor in Management from UCI, Andrea’s fundraising experience includes extensive expertise in the development and execution of planned giving, capital campaigns, major event planning, volunteer management, database development, grant writing, and direct mail appeals. Andrea joined the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History in September 2022 focusing on assisting supporters to make gifts with their assets through legacy giving. Andrea’s prior experience includes serving 17 years as the Director of Development at The Riviera Ridge School. At Riviera Ridge, formerly known as Marymount of Santa Barbara, Andrea was ultimately responsible for all aspects of the school’s financial development efforts, including its legacy giving program. Prior to joining Marymount, Andrea spent 7-plus years as the Financial Development Director for the Santa Barbara Family YMCA where she surpassed the YMCA’s “Growing Together” Capital Campaign goal by raising $4.2 million needed to renovate and expand the aging downtown facility. She is a Past President of the Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties Chapter of Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and was recognized as the 2011 Santa Barbara Family YMCA Volunteer of the Year. Andrea serves on the board for the Southern California Council of Charitable Gift Planners and the Santa Barbara High School Theater Foundation.
