UNICEF posted these photographs on June 20, 2017, World Refugee Day. The families pictured here have, thanks to the U.N. agency, escaped famine and civil war in the Congo and South Sudan.

Margrat experienced complications during the birth of their daughter Agnes Draru. Without sufficient medical facilities and an operating theatre at the refugee settlement, Margrat’s life was put in danger and Agnes was starved of oxygen at birth, leaving her permanently brain damaged.
