The AAUW workshop was originally designed to address the gender gap in salaries and help women better negotiate for wages and benefits. AFP’s recent study, The Impact of Gender on Fundraising Salaries 2014-2018, found that women fundraisers make about 10 percent less than their male counterparts. This is particularly noteworthy since 70 percent of fundraising professionals are female.

Through this special partnership with AAUW, which was announced by AFP President and CEO Mike Geiger, MBA, CPA, on March 31 during AFP’s ICON in San Antonio (see the video here), all members can participate in the workshop. The skills and knowledge provided in the workshop, while focused on salary and benefit negotiations, will help fundraisers in a variety of conversations—including talking with donors, making “the ask,” and addressing tough topics with colleagues—and make everyone more aware of the salary gap in the profession.

“When there’s gender pay equity, we all benefit,” said Geiger. “Part of AFP’s role is to ensure, as much as possible, that our members will have economic security when they decide to enter the profession and be given equal opportunities to advance as far as they want in fundraising. AAUW is a great leader and pioneer in this area, and their incredible Work Smart program is an important step towards that goal. The workshop will give our members the essential tools they need to empower themselves in the workplace.”

All AFP members will have access to AAUW Work Smart Online, a free one-hour digital course, which provides strategies and skills to help individuals learn to better negotiate on behalf of themselves. The workshop provides negotiating tactics that participants can feel comfortable with and teaches them that negotiation is a conversation, not a confrontation.

AFP members will learn to analyze and verbalize their professional worth and accomplishments and develop a value statement that can empower their conversations with others. After completion, nearly half of the participants were able to negotiate for a raise, promotion, or higher-paying job, according to AAUW.

“I am grateful for the leadership and collaboration of Kim Churches, the chief executive officer of AAUW,” said Geiger. “We were both very excited when we agreed to this partnership because it’s going to be such a great benefit for our members and for the profession in general as we work to advance pay equity in fundraising. Many thanks to AAUW, and I hope members find the workshop beneficial in their day-to-day work.”
