Mike’s Monday Message Takeover: Looking Back, Moving Forward: Reflections on My Time as Chair

As my term as chair of the AFP Global Board of Directors comes to a close, I find myself reflecting with both gratitude and a shared sense of accomplishment. The work we have done over the past two years is part of a larger journey—one that began long before my tenure and will continue well beyond it. I am honored to have contributed to this organization’s progress.

When I stepped into this role, my vision was clear: to amplify the voices of all fundraisers and to foster greater inclusivity within our sector. I vividly remember my own early experiences in this profession and how isolating it felt to be in spaces where I didn’t always feel welcomed. Thankfully, I found mentors and peers who reassured me that not only was there a place for me in fundraising, but that I belonged. That sense of belonging renewed my determination to drive positive change.

Reflecting on my time as chair, I am proud of the many moments of hope and growth we have experienced together. One such moment was interviewing Misty Copeland, the groundbreaking principal dancer of the American Ballet Theatre, at AFP ICON 2023. Her story of resilience and breaking barriers deeply resonated with me and many others in the audience. Our conversation was a powerful reminder of the shared challenges and triumphs faced by those navigating spaces where they’ve historically been excluded. It reinforced my commitment to making AFP a place where all fundraisers feel valued, seen, and empowered.

However, our progress has not been without its challenges. AFP has had moments when it has fallen short of its potential, but meaningful change often arises from honest and difficult conversations. For instance, the courageous decision by Nneka Allen, Mide Akerewusi, and Múthoní Karíukí to speak openly about the anti-Black racism they encountered within the AFP Greater Toronto Chapter sparked vital discussions about our collective and individual responsibilities in addressing racial injustice.

One significant outcome of these conversations is the new Member Code of Conduct, which will take effect in January 2025. This code establishes clear expectations for behavior and accountability, aiming to create an environment where every member feels respected and valued. It underscores our collective dedication to equity and inclusion, paving the way for a professional community where everyone can thrive.

Another milestone during my tenure was the AFP Global Board’s unanimous decision to invite Nikole Hannah-Jones, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The 1619 Project, as the opening keynote speaker for AFP ICON 2024 in Toronto. Her interview, led by esteemed leadership coach and storyteller Nneka Allen, symbolized an acknowledgment of the changes needed within AFP and the broader philanthropic sector. Seeing two descendants of American slavery, one American and one Canadian, share AFP’s largest stage to connect the narratives of Black history and life was profoundly moving. It was a moment that renewed my hope and underscored the importance of creating spaces for truth-telling and justice.

Connecting with so many of you—at AFP ICON, chapter events, and through virtual gatherings—has been another highlight of my time as chair. These interactions reaffirm why our work matters: together, we make a tangible difference in lives and communities worldwide.

As I prepare to transition leadership to my successor, Roger Ali, MBA, C.Dir., CFRE, I feel hopeful that AFP will be well-guided under his stewardship. Roger has shown a strong dedication to this profession, and I look forward to the continued focus on unity, community, and belonging and supporting him as the immediate past chair.

To the AFP membership, thank you for entrusting me with this role over the past two years and for the many years I’ve served in various capacities within AFP. It has been a privilege to work alongside you, and I am eager to find new ways to contribute to AFP’s mission in the future.

Here’s to the next chapter!
