Mike’s Monday Message Takeover: United in Purpose: Canada, AFP, and Our Shared Mission

As chair of AFP Global, I have the privilege of representing all of our members—whether in the U.S., Canada, or around the world. In a Mike’s Message Takeover last month, I noted the challenges facing American fundraisers as a result of U.S. government actions. Now, I want to speak to the stress and uncertainty that my fellow Canadians are experiencing.

The tariffs that the Trump Administration has placed on Canada will have real economic consequences, potentially resulting in less resources for our nonprofits and a greater demand for many essential services that Canadian charities provide to our communities. That is why AFP Canada is urging the federal government to take decisive action to mitigate the negative impact of tariffs on the Canadian charitable sector.

I understand the feelings of being undervalued and disrespected that many are experiencing, hearing this rhetoric and anticipating the impact these decisions will have.

Yet, as a proud Canadian and an Indo-Caribbean immigrant, I also know the strength that comes from resilience and community. Canada welcomed me as a young person, gave me the opportunity to receive an education, build a fulfilling career, and find a place where I truly belong. We are Peacekeepers, and we believe in collaboration, respect, and lifting each other up.

My journey in fundraising has been shaped by the incredible people I have met along the way—many of them fellow Canadians, but also Americans who have become my mentors, colleagues, and friends. They share my deep commitment to freedom, cultural respect, and social justice. I know without a doubt that they are there for me, just as I am for them.

The last couple of months as chair have been a whirlwind, but what has stood out is the passion of our AFP community. I’ve had the privilege of engaging with U.S. chapters that care deeply about our members and work tirelessly to elevate our mission in support of fundraisers everywhere.

AFP is a non-partisan organization. We are a global community where every voice matters, and now—more than ever—is the time to be part of the dialogue, not step away from it. Think about the impact you can make simply by showing up, contributing your voice, and being present at the table.

That’s why I’m thrilled to see so many Canadians registering for AFP ICON. We already have over 185 Canadians planning to attend—on par with where we were in 2023 for our last U.S.-based conference. I hope to see this number continue to rise over the next few weeks. Your continued participation strengthens our profession, our network, and our shared values.

As Maya Angelou wisely said, “This too shall pass.” While we navigate uncertainty, let’s stay focused on what unites us and the work we do together to create a better future for all.

I look forward to connecting with many of you next month in Seattle. In the meantime, please feel free to reach out to me at AFPChair@afpglobal.org with any questions or concerns, or to arrange a visit with your chapter or board. I’d love to hear from you.
