AFP Greater Toronto Chapter: Fundraising Day 2022
On May 25, 2020, while we were adjusting to a new normal for our sector, we watched in horror as George Floyd was murdered in front of the world. Any other day, we probably wouldn’t have noticed. But because we were at home, paying close attention to social media, it was hard to not see it. I, like many others, did a lot of self-reflection during this time and was reminded of the racism I faced growing up in a suburb outside of Toronto. This prompted me to want to do more around Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA).
We are all fortunate to work in a sector that results in lasting change for the betterment of society. But we can always do more to ensure our work and approach to addressing inequities is reflective of the diverse communities that we serve.
I’m thrilled to share that this year’s theme is IDEAs for Change. We are all doing work to address inclusion, diversity, equity and access and we can all learn from each other. What are we doing to ensure our work reflects the various communities we serve? What steps are organizations taking to make their hiring practices more inclusive? How are we addressing power and privilege in philanthropy? These are some of the many conversations we are looking to lean into.
We need to further reflect on where we are as a sector and engage in opportunities to have open and honest dialogues that challenge us to do better. Join us as we seek to disrupt!
