AFP Member Spotlights are a recurring series of interviews with AFP members, highlighting the unique individuals and career paths that exist within the fundraising profession. If you know an inspiring fundraising professional who deserves to be featured, please email [email protected].

In this member spotlight, we interviewed Gwendolyne Valles, development associate - major gifts department at Rush University Medical Center. She shared how early hands-on experience sparked her passion for philanthropy, the importance of expanding horizons through community and DEI-focused work, and her perspective on balancing innovation, impact, and personal wellbeing in the fundraising profession.

Q: How did you start your career in the fundraising profession, and what led you there?
A: While I was attending my alma mater, Butler University, I was hired as the development and stewardship intern in the office of advancement. Through this internship, I learned about the value of philanthropy and as I returned to the U.S. from my life abroad, I realized I wanted to get back into fundraising and helping students. I am very grateful to Rush for the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in my community.

Q: When and why did you decide to become an AFP member?
A: My organization offered to cover the cost of membership, and I thought it would be a great opportunity to expand my network. I joined the Latinx affinity group and through that connection I discovered a fundraising class that will help me grow as a young professional. I've now been a member for about a year!

Q: Are you doing anything innovative at your organization (or a past organization) that you think other fundraisers could benefit from?
A: I am part of a strategic steering committee for my organization's DEI initiatives. My young, multi-lingual, and international experiences help inform the group so that we can hold true to our mission/values.

Q: What is your favorite word? (only one word) How has this word influenced or inspired your career?
A: Horizon- like sunsets and the sunrise. It represents a line of endings and new beginnings. I am constantly expanding my horizons through new experiences and new connections. It is important to recognize that you can pivot and still build your way up.

Q: What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?
A: When I worked at the state house (during the pandemic) I provided support for 3 state representatives. In that experience, I helped a family (through my channels of liaisons) access appropriate military resources so they could honorably bury their father.

Q: In your opinion, what is the biggest challenge facing the nonprofit fundraising profession today?
A: We are stuck in tradition, and the status quo is holding us back from innovating and reaching new demographics.

Q: What advice do you have for other fundraising professionals?
A: The work will always be there. The world will not end if you need another day to complete a task. Prioritize and organize your tasks but also do not forget to take care of your mental health.
