Mike’s Monday Message: AI-Assisted Career Coaching, Job Postings, and More
Most people in the fundraising field have likely heard the statistic that the average length of time in a position for development staff is approximately 18 months. This type of turnover is not unique to fundraising, however. In all types of industries across the board, employees are leaving their current jobs in search of more flexible work options, a more manageable workload, higher pay, or advancement opportunities they don’t see with their current employer.
I’m certainly not advocating for everyone to leave their jobs, but if you are looking for a new position, or you’re interested in career development for a future move or internal promotion, AFP’s Career Center has some great resources that you may not be familiar with.
Job Postings: On the other hand, if you have an opening at your organization, wouldn’t you want to fill it with someone that you know is dedicated to their profession and committed to ethical fundraising? AFP’s Career Center is that go-to source to find qualified professional fundraisers.
As part of AFP’s commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, and access, all of the job postings on AFP’s Career Center are required to include the position’s expected salary range. We believe this type of transparency is essential in reducing the pay gaps for women and people of color in our industry. It also encourages transparency, which is a key principle in the AFP Code of Ethical Standards. Plus, research has shown that job postings that include a salary range, receive 30% more views!!
Here's an important career hack: Even if you’re not in the market right now for a new job, browsing job postings can be a great way to see what skills you’ll need to reach your future career goals, and an opportunity for you to see what similar positions are paying, if you’re interested in negotiating a salary increase.
You can find job postings on the AFP Career Center website. You can also find featured jobs in AFP’s daily newsletter.
AFP360°: AFP360° is an online career builder and management tool included with your AFP membership through our partnership with Korn Ferry and its Advance program. This career coaching service takes advantage of artificial intelligence to provide resume analysis, feedback on interviewing techniques, and more. This is a huge member benefit that can help you set yourself apart during your job search. If you don't know about this member benefit, you owe it to yourself to at least look into it.
Career Resource Articles: Another feature of AFP’s Career Center is the vast library of career-related articles on topics like networking, personal branding, interviewing, leadership, and resume writing.
And one final "tip”: If you’re interested in career development, I would also highly recommend attending AFP LEAD, AFP’s leadership conference, taking place in Philadelphia, PA, October 19-21. This is another great resource for developing the skills you need to take the next step in your career.
