AFP Member Spotlights are a recurring series of interviews with AFP members, highlighting the unique individuals and career paths that exist within the fundraising profession. If you know an inspiring fundraising professional who deserves to be featured, please email [email protected].

In this member spotlight, we interviewed Jackeline Rodriguez, donor engagement manager at Mission Action, a nonprofit dedicated to serving Latinx/Indigenous, low-income, and immigrant people in San Francisco’s Mission District. She shared with us how she worked her way through various roles before finding a sense of purpose in development, aligning personal values with professional impact. Through AFP, Jackeline has found community, tools for growth, and inspiration to lead with hope, justice, and a commitment to building meaningful donor relationships.

Q: How did you start your career in the fundraising profession, and what led you there?
A: I worked in the restaurant industry while putting myself through college. After graduation, I was ready for a change and applied for a front desk position at the nonprofit where I currently work. From there, I moved through roles in operations, finance, and HR. Eventually, I found my way to fundraising—and immediately felt at home. This role allows me to align my personal values with my professional work, and it’s where I feel the most empowered.

Q: When and why did you decide to become an AFP member?
A: As our organization began building out a more intentional development department, my director of development encouraged me to explore AFP. After attending the AFP conference and seeing the wealth of resources and community support available, we knew it would be a meaningful investment in our growth. Joining AFP was a step toward strengthening both my skills and our collective impact.

Q: Are you doing anything innovative at your organization that other fundraisers could benefit from?
A: While it may not be groundbreaking, we’re rolling out a donor welcome packet to help deepen relationships from the start. We want every supporter to feel seen, appreciated, and connected to our mission—and this is one way we’re building a culture of gratitude and transparency.

Q: What is your favorite word? How has this word influenced or inspired your career?
A: Esperanza (hope). Hope has guided my entire journey—from being the first in my family to pursue a professional career, to finding purpose in work that uplifts and empowers our communities. It reminds me that our mission is not only possible—it’s necessary.

Q: What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?
A: I’m proud of the work I’ve led to grow our fundraising efforts. From planning our gala to developing strategies for individual giving, I’ve found a career that not only supports my community but also affirms my identity. I’m proud to be building power and resources for those who are too often left out of the conversation.

Q: How has being an AFP member benefited you in your career?
A: Representation and shared experience matter, especially in a field where relationship-building is central to success. That’s why I’m looking forward to participating in AFP’s affinity group meetings.

Q: In your opinion, what is the biggest challenge facing the nonprofit fundraising profession today?
A: The political and economic landscape has created deep uncertainty for many nonprofits. As funding becomes more competitive, organizations are being forced to prove their worth in a market that often overlooks grassroots, community-led work. The challenge is not just about dollars—it’s about visibility, equity, and the long-term sustainability of our movements.

Q: What advice do you have for other fundraising professionals?
A: As someone still new to the field, I’m learning every day. But what I know so far is this: if your work is rooted in justice, people will feel it. Stay grounded in your mission, and let your values guide you.
