Data-Driven Fundraising: How Smarter Insights Will Drive Better Results in 2026
This article is part of a five-part series: 5 Fundraising Trends for 2026
Often the biggest barrier to personalized stewardship is the quality of your donor data, or in some cases, your complete lack of data. There’s nothing worse than appearing tone deaf and unappreciative because you’ve sent a donor an appeal that has incorrect information. This may have to do with the systems you’re using. It may also be a matter of updating and streamlining your team’s own processes to prioritize data hygiene. Whatever the case may be, if your data is impeding your retention efforts, it is likely also hindering all other aspects of your fundraising strategy, which in the data-driven world of 2026, will not be sustainable.
Increasingly, data is the key driver behind nonprofits’ decision making. You need to know exactly who your donors are, how they prefer to communicate, their capacity to give, what they want to support, and how they’re giving, if you want your message to resonate. With limited resources, organizations can’t afford to go into their campaigns without this data. They also can’t afford to continue with strategies that are not providing some type of return on investment. Being able to pivot mid-campaign to capitalize on what is demonstrably working is critical, and this is only possible through the collection of data.
Data is also foundational for being able to establish your own goals and expectations as a fundraiser. Burnout is a constant in our sector. There are countless reasons for this, but particularly lately, fundraisers are feeling additional pressure because of the disconnect that exists between what leadership expects and what is actually feasible. Being able to participate in the budgeting process and the development of key performance indicators is of course key, but assuming you have a team that is open to collaboration, having the data to inform those discussions will make it much easier to be on the same page with leadership and other departments. When your goals are grounded in data there is more room for success, and we need that to maintain the joy that keeps us in this exhausting but rewarding field.
